Growing up in Kentucky seemed bittersweet, when at 14 years of age, his family and his siblings left and moved to the southernmost of all states, Florida before returning to Kentucky to finish college. Once college was under his belt, West Hyler became the artistic director of Magic Carpet Children's Theater in Ft. Lauderdale from 97-98. He then worked as a member of the Journeyman Company at the Warehouse Theater from '99-'01 before taking a position as head of drama at the Fine Arts Center High School from '02-'03.
It was during that time, that he created and was the artistic director of Mythmakers Theater Company from 2000- 2002. This unique program toured all over the southeast US, playing at colleges, universities and notable regional theaters and became a semi-professional theater company.
After that, he began a national directing career, directing over 40 plays at regional theaters across America as well as working on Broadway in glorious NY. In 2006 he graduated USCD with an MFA in Directing. Hyler whose grandfather was a farmer, is the first in his family to complete a Master's Degree.
In 2006 Hyler was awarded a Drama League Fall Directing Fellowship in New York City.
In Film and Television he worked on the sitcom "Rodney" and the syndicated dramedy "Gilmore Girls".
A husband and recent father to a one year old boy Dashiell, Hyler's family currently live and work in the Big Apple where he is Associate Director of the smash-hit musical Jersey Boys on Broadway and has worked as a member of the directing team. companies of the show all over the world including, Chicago, Vegas, London, Toronto, Melbourne, and Sydney.
Straddling between two worlds, while the musical play genre provides instant gratification, the filming is a different process and when completed you have yet to 'show' anyone. He waits no more.
His short film A JAKE AND A TOM, has it's scheduled WORLD PREMIERE at the 16th ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL FAMILY FILM FESTIVAL in Hollywood, CA, on Sunday MAY 20th 2011.
'A Jake and A Tom' tells two stories; the first is the relationship between a father and his grown up son who don't see eye to eye. Their attitudes mature during the course of a day of hunting. The second is of an old 'tom' turkey trying to protect a young 'jake' turkey from the perils of danger. The two worlds eventually enmesh as the 'jake' encounters the hunters.
The Film was awarded a Production Fund Grant from the South Carolina Film Commission in 2010.
