Monique Phillips prepared for her pivotal role as a female patient in the throws of a nervous breakdown in a scene opposite Blythe Danner and Tom Wilkinson in THE LAST KISS, like most actors prepare for their roles. However, Phillips was intrigued that her onscreen performance would be challenging, and she wanted to make it as authentic and realistic as possible. Phillips' desire to portray this person in a very real light carried her to where she needed to be.
Phillips felt that she could let her intuition take over. "To listen, to really listen. Maybe to submit. I prepared for the part by just being honest. Funny, but this was one of those roles that I could identify with! I believe we all have needs, to be loved, validated, reassured, when facing crossroads at various times in our lives."
When she was offered the part in THE LAST KISS, she knew she was in the company of two of the film industries' acting icons. Her experience working with Danner, Wilkinson and Director Tony Goldwyn underscored her love for the craft of acting.
When her artistic mother, a skater and dancer with dreams of acting, asked a very young Phillips what she wanted to be when she grew up, she responded "Lucille Ball". She was also enamored and inspired by another leading female comedic actress, Carol Burnett, and in addition enjoyed all of the British Carry On Gang films.
A current resident of Montreal, Quebec, Phillips was born the middle child of three girls, to an airforce career father and stay at home mom. Constantly being uprooted allowed her to personally transform as situations arose. As a youngster, she learned how to be flexible and the attention grabber within her family and amongst her friends. Constantly spearheading havoc often found her in trouble with the adults at various intervals.
While growing up, Phillips' artistic side matured and she worked in a variety of mixed mediums, including drawing and sculpting, but quickly became restless and yearned to express more. An avid athlete in high school, she competed in Soccer and excelled in Track and Field where her Relay Team brought home the Regional Title.
It was during her teen years, that Phillips developed an interest in film and television. Following high school, she attended the University of Ottawa and graduated with a BA in Theatre.
Her favorite childhood memories were in St. Bruno, Quebec, one of the few cities where her family lived for more than several years, and where she still considers it home. Fond of pets, she grew up with her family companions, a female Chihuahua-Terrier Cross, Cindy, and Smokey, a male Shiatsu.
In addition to acting, Phillips has a newfound love for writing and she currently has a screenplay completed entitled Nemo the Great.
Phillips can be seen in roles from Mars Rising, The Thrill of the Kill, The Last Kiss, The Canadian Case Files, Instant Dread, Hayley's Comment, The Last Chapter, Savage Messiah and Marriage Counsellor.
A little known fact, that although uncredited for her critical role, Phillips was the hand that shot Chucky, in BRIDE OF CHUCKY.
